#ThrowbackThursday: The Best Ad Ever
A look back at an unforgettable ad from DCTF 40 years ago.
Welcome to #ThrowbackThursday, a weekly glance back into the Dave Campbell's Texas Football archives for the unforgettable, the legendary and the often amazing items across DCTF's 55-year history.
It was a different time 40 years ago. Dave Campbell's Texas Football was a mere 15 years old. Richard Nixon was in the White House (though not for long). West Germany was a thing. Hank Aaron had just become the all-time home run king of baseball.
And Darrell K. Royal, the legendary Texas coach, once again graced the cover of DCTF -- the second time he'd nabbed the most prestigious cover in Texas.
The 1974 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football is full of fantastic writing, not just from the legendary Dave Campbell but also from the likes of Mickey Herskowitz and other titans of Texas journalism.
But while you flip through the 1974 edition, you can't help but stop at the annual writers' poll, in which writers from across the state and nation issue their predictions for the season. No, it's not the predictions (though those are fun to read, too), but rather the ad for subscriptions to Texas Football that are so unforgettable.
There they are -- pages 14 and 15 -- portraying a bride and groom, and perhaps the greatest advertisement for Dave Campbell's Texas Football we've ever had.
1974 -- quite an era, huh?
